Gorges, Swimming Holes and Creeks of Port Douglas

mossman gorge

The region around Port Douglas is blessed with some wonderful and spectacular fresh water swimming holes. If the ocean doesn’t tickle your fancy these are a great way to get your toes wet and experience nature.

Mossman Gorge

Take the family to one of the most beautiful locations in the area and it’s only 20 minutes north of Port. You can go swimming in the beautiful crystal waters. You’re best to just jump right in! It’s freezing but wonderfully refreshing.  You can bring your snorkeling equipment to explore the depths.

Cassowary Falls

Situated near the Daintree village, Cassowary Falls is tucked away in a secluded valley and is one of the area’s true hidden gems. Take a tour with Daintree Discovery Tours for an expertly guided tour of the area.

Spring Creek Falls

The magnificent Spring Creek Falls is found at the end of a narrow valley after a 1.5km walk along Spring Creek. We recommend only attempting it if you have a very high level of physical fitness and are an experienced bush walker, as there is some climbing over boulders required (they can be slippery when wet so be very careful). The walk is a great chance to experience flora and fauna of the area – from rainforest to eucalyptus scrub, all are alive with wildlife. There are numerous rock pools where you can swim, but it’s not recommended after heavy rainfall or during flooding. You can assess this in Mowbray which is just past the Glengarry Big 4 caravan park. Be sure to check on conditions before you head off on the journey.

Cape Tribulation

There is a ‘secret’ swimming hole located just behind Mason’s Shop (tourist info centre). Have a coffee and a bite to eat at the café and then pop out the back for a dip (very refreshing on a hot, steamy day).  Ask the staff at Mason’s Store for details and a small gold coin donation is always appreciated for their efforts in keeping the swimming hole maintained.
