5 Things to do with Kids in Port Douglas

family tour port douglas

One of the most common questions we get asked here at the Port Douglas Tourist Infomation Centre is: ‘what are the best kid friendly activies for families?’ So here is our list of the top 5 things to do with the kiddies in tow (and they are lots of fun for the parents as well).

The Great Barrier Reef

First of all you MUST GO to the reef on the Quicksilver’s Outer Barrier Reef boat Wavepiecer or sail to Low Isles with Wavedancer.   They are both awesome and family friendly, but both offer very different experiences.

Wavedancer – you sail out to the beautiful Low Isles where you can; hop in a glass bottom boat to see the reef (while staying dry!), build sandcastles on the beach, swim in snorkel in calm waters and there is plenty of space for the kids to just run around exploring!

Wavepiecer  – you cruise out to the Outer Barrier Reef pontoon anchored on Agincourt Ribbon Reef.  While there you can go on a semi sub with the kids (as many times as you like!), jump into the water to get involved in the fish feeding (or just watch from the platform for the less adventurous) or just go for a swim and snorkel.

Both are heaps of fun, with different fish and coral at each site. There are some great Marine Biologists on both boats who are always happy to answer questions. It’s a great educational experience for school aged kids especially.

The Lady Douglas:

It cruises the inlet for about 1 ½ hours and is fantastic for everyone.  You can see crocodiles (always a favourite with the kids) and many other types of wildlife. This is really good way to see these types of animals interacting in their natural environment.

Wild Life Habitat:

You can have breakfast with the birds, lunch with the lorikeets or just enjoy the park that has heaps of different animals.  The kids will also get a chance to hand feed the kangaroos/wallabies.  It’s all up close, personal and so much fun.  At night they have a new 2 hour guided tour by torchlight, where you’ll be able see some of the nocturnal animals you’d miss during the day.

Hartley’s Crocodile farm:

You can see crocodiles being feed, do a tour of farm, take a boat ride or pop into one of the heap of wild life presentations and shows on offer. The Crocodile Attack show is a must do, do not miss it!!  It’s been awarded the best tourist attraction since 2009.

 Mossman Gorge:

Take the family to one of the most beautiful locations in the area and it’s only 20 minutes north of  Port.  There is a beautiful swimming hole and a 3 km rainforest walk.  Take a picnic or have lunch at the new Mossman Gorge Centre.  If you want to go swimming don’t wade in slow, just jump right in! It’s freezing but wonderful.
