If you have a car and have a thirst for discovery there are some sensational drives around the Port Douglas region and you don’t need a 4×4 to enjoy them.
‘The Great Barrier Reef Drive‘ from Port Douglas to Cairns is one of the best stretches of road in Australia. Along most of its length you are confronted by magnificent views of the ocean. This is unfortunate for the driver who has to keep their eyes on the road! There are plenty of lookouts along the way along however for the driver to soak in the ambience. In particular the view at the Rex Lookout is amazing.
A beautiful 2-hour drive north through dense rainforest is Cape Tribulation. Keep an eye out for cassowaries and monitor lizards along the way. On the journey you will pass through the town of Mossman (stop at the Silky Oaks Lodge for a delicious lunch),the beautiful Mossman Gorge and the Mossman River. The Gorge is a great place to spend some time, with over 430 bird, 18 reptile and 12 amphibian species to search for.
If you drive inland you’ll reach the Atherton Tablelands. The drive itself takes you thru the mountains and into the undulating countryside. The entire area is filled with wonderful fresh local produce. One of our favourite places to recommend is the Skybury coffee plantation, as you could expect the coffee is great but so is the food. A relaxing visit to Tinaroo damn or Lake Eacham are also must-do’s.
